01A late start and a better plan
I rolled away after lunch with more water than certainty. The first miles were fast and familiar, but the washboard soon asked for patience. By sunset, the original campsite was still an hour away. A small shelf above the road offered a better answer: room for one tent, a windbreak, and a view across the reef.

02What the desert gives back
The next morning traded cold shadows for warm sandstone. Nothing dramatic happened—and that became the point. Travel can be a sequence of small corrections: loosen your grip, take the unmarked turn, stop before you are forced to. The desert rewards the person willing to notice.
03The turn we almost missed
Near the old stock gate, the obvious track kept climbing while a faded line slipped toward the canyon floor. We stopped, checked the paper map against the horizon, and chose the quieter road. It added seven slow miles and delivered the best water-carved walls of the trip.
04Notes carried home
Keep the first afternoon short, protect one liter of water for camp, and never rush the final hour of light. The practical lessons matter, but the lasting one was simpler: uncertainty is not a flaw in the trip. It is the space where attention wakes up.
